There’s an excellent study of the average age of the Indian (and other teams) found in the post “Dad’s army”. Through this study, the author, Mohan, shows that India is actually has one of the youngest teams out of the main teams in the world cup! That’s a revelation.
I guess the concern of ‘old’ Indian team comes from the fear that we have poor fielders.
Rather than point to age as a problem, I’m quite certain the the fear of us all is the lack of ‘fielding’ stars. Assuming Karthik does not bat, our fielding hopes rest on Yuvraj and Uthappa… which is sad considering Kaif, Raina, proven match-influencers are missing. What we see is not so much old age but sluggish feet.
Chappell’s comment (quoted on that site) is therefore all the more interesting:
It is what it is. I can’t change it. It’s what we’ve got. You can look at the positive side of it and say we’ve got more experience than anyone else. The downside is that we’ll give away a bit in the field but hopefully we can more than make up for that with the experience with the bat and ball. I think it’s fine for a team to focus on it’s strengths… but earlier I think Chappell had said that the best fielding team will win the world cup. So, will India win? Maybe Chappell doesn’t really think so!

Indian age would have been an issue in lush greens where the fielders would be expected to leap and slide. WI grounds would not provide that opportunity to any side (IHMO), so the age may not be such a big deal.
